Part of the noir mystique is that these were B movies. This is not entirely true. Most of the films regarded as classics today had relatively well-known actors and relatively decent budgets. The Poverty Row flicks - the output of studios like Monogram and PRC - are an essential element of what we call noir, but even today, they are less widely known than the icons above, Detour being a possible exception.
