The principles that run the real universe may not be hallucinatory or hysterical, but when you have to funnel them into a 2-hour movie, there just isn’t much room for the fine points of spacetime or quantum chaos so a certain amount of compression is called for. Fiction films are, by and large, a non-literal reading of the available record; directors, screenwriters, cinematographers, actors and others are forced, on occasion, to rely on a bit of the old Sturm und Drang to get the idea across.
